Mercedes-Benz Antos makes its mark for Amey

Proven products and a trusted supplier meant that when Amey needed an 18-tonne chassis for road marking duties it drew the line at anything other than a Mercedes-Benz.

The infrastructure support service leader’s new Antos 1824 arrived via Dealer group Rygor Commercials and is fitted with a bespoke body by specialist builder Somerford Equipment.

The truck has been assigned to the Birmingham Highways Maintenance and Management Service – Amey’s 25-year contract with Birmingham City Council is Europe’s largest local government highways partnership.

Designed for heavy-duty distribution work and associated roles, the Mercedes-Benz Antos range incorporates a sweeping array of model variants with gross weights from 18 to 44 tonnes. All offer exceptional comfort and precise handling.

Amey worked with its supply chain partner and vehicle provider Hitachi Capital, in procuring the latest addition to its fleet. The Antos has an extended M- ClassicSpace day cab with optional centre seat. It employs a high-torque, 7.7-litre straight-six which produces 175 kW (238 hp) and is paired with a smooth, efficient Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmission.

Amey incorporated input from its operatives when drawing up the body specification with Somerford Equipment, a specialist builder of road marking vehicles based in Sandbach, Cheshire. The truck is equipped with three fixed oil-fired units for heating the thermoplastic material used to mark roads – one each for white, yellow and a third colour, usually blue or red. A fourth, demountable preheater is allocated to the high friction surfacing material typically laid at junctions.

The highly insulated preheaters have hydraulic paddles which are driven by the truck’s power take-off (PTO) system, rather than a separate diesel engine, a feature that contributes to quiet operation. Meanwhile, safety is enhanced by a low point of access to the body for Amey’s operatives, an anti-slip finish on the bed, and a 360-degree recordable camera system by ISS, which provides live feeds while the vehicle is at work.

Mercedes-Benz is one of two preferred truck suppliers to Amey, and approximately three-quarters of the high-profile operator’s 300 heavy vehicles wear three-pointed stars. All were supplied by Rygor Commercials, a Dealer with which it has enjoyed a relationship that goes back many years.

Amey Supply Chain Manager Jason Clement said: “Not only do Mercedes-Benz trucks offer the well-proven reliability which is crucial to our operations, but they are also fuel-efficient and cost-effective to run, and impressively equipped in terms of safety systems.

“The opinions of front-line colleagues are important, too, and our Mercedes-Benz vehicles are very popular with those who use them. That applies particularly in this case. The road marking team in Birmingham are delighted with their new truck, not least because we involved them in its design – we listened to what they had to say, then built them the truck they wanted.”

Amey sources Mercedes-Benz vans as well as trucks from Rygor Commercials. “The Dealer provides a first-class service,” continued Mr Clement. “It is customer-focused, proactive, and when issues crop up, as they always will from time to time, quick to respond.”

Rygor Truck Sales Executive Jeremy Price commented: “We are very proud of our long association with Amey, an acknowledged leader in its field, and a company that was founded nearly 100 years ago and has its headquarters to this day in Oxfordshire, which is within our own area of representation.

“Rygor’s commitment to Setting Standards ensures that whatever the application, we can supply the right chassis at a highly attractive cost, and then provide the industry-leading aftersales support that our customers deserve.”

Under its contract with Birmingham City Council, Amey is responsible for maintaining and managing 2,500 km of roads, as well as 4,200 km of footways, 95,000 street lights, 76,000 street trees, some 1,100 traffic light signals, and more than 1,000 bridges, tunnels and highways structures.
