Vito Loan is Music to Wells Virtuosi’s Ears

Friday 8th August 2014

Rygor Vito van and Orchestra

Rygor is proud to be supporting The Wells Virtuosi, which has just returned from a 12-day tour of Europe.

Rygor, the UK’s largest Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer, provided this supremely talented group of string players from Wells Cathedral School with a Vito van to help transport instruments, lighting and equipment from their Somerset base to eight different concert venues across Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland.

If the excitement of a tour wasn’t enough, the orchestra is also going to be the focus of an in-depth documentary film about the tour and life at one of the finest music schools in the world. Traveling with the orchestra was Tanya Cochrane, the documentary’s producer and director.

Tanya said: “Wells is absolutely delighted to have been supported on this tour by Rygor who has supplied a fantastic state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Vito to transport double basses, cellos, lighting equipment and many other necessary items. There are three double basses in the orchestra and they are rather large and awkward to carry as they are extremely fragile – too big and delicate to go under the coach!”

Conducted by the school’s Head of Strings, Matthew Souter, the young classical musicians played a selection of music which included Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 9, Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Tippett’s Little Music for String Orchestra and Strauss’s Metamorphosen. Concert venues included the Bad Homburg Castle Church, Rothenburg’s Franciscan Church, Friedrichshafen Castle Church, Beuron Archabbey and Geneva’s Auditoire de Calvin.

Whilst on tour, the orchestra members also got the chance to do a spot of sightseeing, watching a falconry display on Mount Pfänder and enjoying a boat trip across Lake Geneva, in between performing and rehearsing. Matthew, Tanya and the orchestra were also accompanied by a selection of the Music Department staff, including Academic Music Teacher, Jeremy Meddows-Taylor.
Jeremy said: “I would like to thank Rygor on behalf of Wells Cathedral School for providing the Vito van. It was simply perfect for the job! The orchestra travelled by coach for the trip, but this was sometimes too large to get close enough to the concert venues. The Vito solved all of our problems, allowing us to transport the instruments and equipment easily, safely and quickly. We are extremely grateful to Rygor for the incredibly generous support of this tour.”

Tim Page, Van Sales Manager at Rygor Westbury, said:” We are proud to be able to support these talented young musicians as they embark on this exciting journey. Expensive instruments need safe passage so the new Vito will be the perfect travelling companion.”
