One of London’s largest waste management companies is running its first Mercedes-Benz trucks for many years, a pair of 8×4 Actros supplied by Rygor.

A high-profile sponsor of London Irish RFC, Powerday placed its breakthrough order after being impressed both by the product and by the professionalism of the team at the Heathrow branch of Britain’s biggest Mercedes-Benz Dealer.

The 32-tonners are now operating from Powerday’s headquarters at Willesden Junction, in west London. Both are Actros 3236K models with 265 kW (360 hp) engines and Mercedes PowerShift automated transmissions.

One of the trucks has a steel Thompson tipping body and Palfinger Epsilon crane with grab. The other is fitted with Hyva hook-loading equipment and is capable of handling 40 cubic yard roll-on roll-off bins – it can also pull a drawbar trailer with a second ‘ro-ro’ bin at a gross train weight of up to 44 tonnes.

Founded in 1980, Powerday is a family-owned business and has been growing strongly, doubling in size over the past three years. It owns and operates the largest materials recycling facility in southern England, at which it processes municipal, business, construction and demolition, and event waste.

Operations Manager Brian Hosford was appointed in February, having previously worked as a consultant to Powerday. He recalls: “We put this order out to tender and Rygor’s response was the most competitive, while its sales executive Rish Channa had clearly done his homework and understood exactly what we needed.

“The Actros has a great reputation for reliability, while our new eight-wheelers are reassuringly solid and well-built. Rygor also managed the bodybuilding process for us – everything went very smoothly, with the trucks arriving on time and to the correct specification.

“Having visited its Heathrow dealership and met the team, I have every confidence that Rygor will deliver a reliable service. It is clearly a highly professional dealer and I am very optimistic about the prospects for our new relationship.”

Rish Channa says: “Brian and his colleagues at Powerday run a very impressive operation. This order represents a great opportunity for Rygor to prove the outstanding quality of our products and back-up to a company that is really going places.”
