An insight into the life of a Van Talent Trainee

The Mercedes-Benz Van Talent Programme, is a structured two year course, focused on a range of training styles, including seminars, shadow work placements, assignments, e-learning and exams. Each of the trainees is allocated a dedicated management mentor from Rygor who will be a continued point of contact and guidance at the company as well as an external mentor to help guide them throughout the course.

Felix Brenninkmeijer is a Mercedes-Benz Van Talent sales executive, working at Rygor’s Oxford branch. Here he shares with us his thoughts and experiences working for Rygor and his training programme.

“As a trainee I find I am constantly absorbing information, looking for the next challenge and of course, continuously learning and growing on a daily basis, but I can only do this by receiving the best possible level of training and support.

“Unlike most ‘training courses’, the Van Talent Programme is very hands-on. Gone are the days of sitting with a book in front of you, staying up late and revising for theoretical exams. Mercedes-Benz knows that this is not the most effective way of learning, that as sales executives, we need to be able to understand our customers’ business needs and be able to put into practice our product knowledge to ensure we help them drive their business forward.

“Since being at the Rygor Oxford branch I have learnt how to use integral, industry-wide reporting and admin systems, which can be quite complex to a newbie! I have been fully immersed in the sales process and as opposed to being shown how to do this, I am encouraged to use these systems every day, which has now made it second nature to me and given me a great deal of confidence.

“My typical day consists of doing the yard check, making sure all vans are accounted for and that all point of sales is visible and correct. The sales team then takes the time to get together to go through tasks for the day which could be anything from going out to customer meetings, drafting quotes or working with the Mercedes-Benz Finance department. The more my confidence and experience grows, the more I feel happy to do and continually challenge myself, in the knowledge that I have an excellent team behind me at Rygor and the training I need from the Van Talent programme.

“My proudest moment to date has to be my first van sale. I loved meeting with the customer to understand his needs and explaining to them the benefits that our product and After Sales options could offer him. For example, when I discussed the benefits of Mobilo Van, the customer advised that this could save him not only money in the event of a breakdown, but most importantly reduced vehicle off road time.

“It may sound like a cliché, but I feel as though I am being nurtured from the beginning here at Rygor, which I believe will continue to make be a better sales person.”
