SC Sporthomes launches latest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter conversion with Rygor Commercials
Bespoke conversion specialist SC Sporthomes has wheeled out its latest creation aimed at motorcycle, motorsport and active pastime enthusiasts, and based on a stunningly reworked version of the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
The long-bodied, high-roofed 314 CDI L3 H2 van was supplied by Dealer Rygor Commercials. It then underwent transformation at SC Sporthomes’ Cwmbran production facility, to four-berth Sport Tourer specification. This provides comfortable living accommodation behind the front seats, and a garage at the rear for transporting motorcycles.
Showcasing the levels of luxury and style the converter offers, the Sprinter is upholstered in soft leather and plush fabrics, and fitted with kitchen and bathroom facilities, a full-sized double bed, and seating that converts to sleep another two people. Its fuel-efficient 143 hp engine drives through the front wheels, but the 314 CDI model is also available with rear-wheel drive.
The living area also incorporates storage units, heating, lighting and power points. The garage, meanwhile, has ample space for three motorcycles, as well as lockers for tools and spares, and can be accessed from the outside of the vehicle, via the rear doors, or through the living area.
Highlights of the Sprinter’s striking exterior include 19-inch black alloy wheels shod with low-profile tyres, SC’s own bodykit with front air dam and side skirts, and eye-catching graphic decals.
The new vehicle has taken pride of place in the showroom at SC’s headquarters, and will spend the summer attending exhibitions and events, including the International Dirt Bike Show at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire.
Since completing its first conversion of a Sprinter from the third-generation range launched last year, the company has begun work on another five Sport Tourers, all of which are also based on Mercedes-Benz vehicles supplied by Rygor Commercials.
Sales Manager Ade Deeley said: “Our Sport Tourer model is hugely popular with customers and although we can build on other makes of van, the Sprinter has always been a favourite.
“We expect the latest model to be even more desirable. It offers all the performance, reliability and build quality of the previous generation, but adds new levels of technology, comfort and design in the cab, all of which makes it ideally suited to our conversions.
“The new electric parking brake is particularly welcome – the absence of a traditional handbrake lever means we’ve been able to fit a turntable to the driver’s seat, allowing it to be spun round to face the living area when the vehicle is parked.”
The demonstrator is the first vehicle that SC Sporthomes’ has acquired from Rygor. “We’ve already been impressed by what we’ve seen of the Dealer’s operation,” confirmed Mr Deeley. “Van Key Account Manager Wendy Smith has handled our orders very professionally.”
New Sprinter offers the most car-like driving experience yet seen in a van, with unrivalled levels of comfort, quietness and smoothness. It also breaks new ground thanks to its 4G Internet connectivity – the cutting-edge Mercedes MBUX infotainment system, for example, incorporates a user-friendly voice control function that responds to “Hey Mercedes!” followed by the command, in conjunction with Navigation.
To a reassuring armoury that has enabled the Sprinter to dominate the safety category at awards events for years, Mercedes-Benz has now added more innovation. New features include the autonomous Active Brake Assist system with another ‘first’ in the shape of pedestrian recognition technology, and ATTENTION ASSIST, which detects drowsiness in the driver and encourages them to take breaks when tired.
Among the optional extras sure to be selected by many SC customers, meanwhile, is the smooth and efficient 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission.
SC Sporthomes created its first vehicle in 2002 and has become the supplier of choice for many of those seeking a converted van with which to enjoy a wide range of activities. Its creations have traditionally been bought by motocross and motorcycle road racing competitors, but more recently customers have specified sporthomes for karting, mountain-biking and other sports.
“Our design lends itself well to any pastime that requires a combination of comfortable living space and practical storage or working area, and we can fit out vehicles for whatever the customer requires,” Mr Deeley said. “All, though, come with our trademark luxury, elegance and class, as well as exemplary customer service as standard.”
Rygor’s Wendy Smith added: “SC Sporthomes pride themselves on offering their customers only the very finest vehicles – just as we do at Rygor Commercials. We’re delighted to be working hand-in-hand with another market leader.”
