Rygor Apprentices Mark Successful Probation with Celebratory Track Experience
The Dealer group who currently has 13 first-year commercial vehicle technician and parts apprentices training at its branches, invited the trainees to attend a day at Brooklands. The apprentices were able to hear from Rygor team members who have worked their way up through the industry, starting out themselves as apprentices or trainees, gaining skills and knowledge to allow them to develop into senior roles.
Sam Whittaker, director of customer service and operations for Mercedes-Benz Trucks, also attended the day and spoke to the apprentices about what it is to be a leader. He gave the apprentices an overview of his career to date, showing them how he worked his way up through the Mercedes-Benz business to where he is today.
Sam said: “It was a privilege to spend quality time with such bright, enthusiastic, young apprentices. What a treat to enjoy a day devoted to learning, coupled with a Mercedes-Benz driving experience to mark the completion of their probation period. Our apprentices are the future here at Mercedes-Benz, Fuso and Rygor Group. These young people are the potential leaders of our business in the future.”
James Edwards, Rygor group technical specialist who attended the apprentice day and joined Rygor as an apprentice 19 years ago, said: “Apprenticeships are a great way for individuals to get real work-place experience, learn all there is to know about a company and develop ‘on-the-job’, meaningful skills. From a personal perspective, the training I received gave me the skills and know-how to develop into the role I have today, and I look forward to seeing our current apprentices develop through the Rygor business over the years to come.”
Chris Taylor, Rygor group service director, said: “It was a proud moment for me and the team here at Rygor to be able to take our first-year apprentices to Mercedes-Benz World to celebrate their achievements on their course, to date. This year’s cohort of Rygor apprentices show a real willingness to learn and develop through the Mercedes-Benz apprentice programme. I started as an apprentice and have worked my way up through the industry to get to where I am today; it is one of the reasons that I am so passionate about the importance of apprenticeships. The Mercedes-Benz apprentice programme allows us to give young people life-long skills and encourages them to be the best they can be, nurturing talent from the ground up.”
The day also gave the apprentices the opportunity to sit down with the senior team at Rygor and Mercedes-Benz to talk about their experiences to date and give their feedback. The morning was followed by a passenger AMG ride experience and F1 simulator challenge for the apprentices.
Calvin Peter, a first-year parts apprentice at Rygor’s Reading branch, said: “For me, the apprentice day was an experience I will never forget. From the little croissants for breakfast to going out on the track and being handed gifts for passing probation, it really shows the amount of time and money that is put into the apprentices. I have enjoyed the whole apprenticeship so far, and Rygor have truly took me in and have treated me as a family member, from the colleagues I’m surrounded by, to my manager especially. The learning that is provided by Mercedes-Benz is phenomenal. Being able to go to a college and interacting with new people across the entire country is an experience I recommend the youth to look into.”
Josh Darius, first year technician apprentice at Rygor Oxford, said: “The apprenticeship so far has been a great experience for me, taking on new skills and learning how to take a different approach to tackling the various jobs that our customers bring into the workshop. Working with experienced technicians and learning at the Apprentice Academy means that I am constantly learning every day. The apprentice day that I was invited to at Brookland Mercedes-Benz World was a great experience, spending the day with the other apprentices and some of the Rygor team made for a really great day. For me the whole package makes the apprenticeship feel very rewarding and will help me to continue to progress my skills and knowledge further.”
