Pedal the Ocean

Tuesday 8th December 2015

Rygor is delighted to be sponsoring Anthony Ward Thomas, chairman of the Ward Thomas Group of companies, in his latest fundraising efforts for Naomi House and Jacksplace Children’s Hospice.

Anthony will be attempting to pedal and row the Atlantic Ocean with friend James Ketchell, in a craft which has been designed and built by himself (with a little help from friends). The task is to cross the ocean, setting off from The Canary Islands at the end of January and finishing in Antigua, in 45 to 55 days. This is the first time that this type of challenge has ever been attempted with essentially an upturned bicycle!

Anthony said: “We both love the idea of a serious new challenge that hasn’t been done before. Having raised money for lots of different charities we came across one that stopped us both in our tracks. The nature and definition of a Hospice does not come with many crumbs of comfort but when defined by the age group, has on the surface no upside at all. The great majority of us are family people and discovering Naomi House has made me realise precisely what we take for granted. It is precisely that we have never experienced such sickness in children. It is precisely never having experienced enforced separation, and it is precisely as a parent, I have never experienced the gut wrenching sorrow and impotence in the death of a child.”

We wish Anthony and James the very best of luck in their epic endeavour, for such a fantastic cause and we look forward to hearing about the progress of the challenge.
