Mercedes-Benz Dealer Rygor kicks-off new Oxford United sponsorship in style
Oxford United FC unveiled a three-pointed star signing at its first home game of the season, in the shape of Mercedes-Benz Dealer Group Rygor Commercials.
The EFL League One club has signed a sponsorship agreement with Rygor, whose branch in the city has just been given a £1-million facelift.
Oxford United has acquired three smart new vans with funding support from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services – the Dealer took back its previous vehicles in part-exchange.
Rygor was match-day sponsor for the team’s fixture against Fleetwood Town. As well as taking a private box and promoting its brand on pitch-side banners, it presented three vehicles outside the hospitality area at the Kassam Stadium.
A pair of stunning Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickups and a 3.5-tonne van from the recently-launched, third-generation Sprinter range, they attracted plenty of interest from fans arriving at the ground for the game. One of the X-Class models was later drafted in for a ‘shoot the boot’ challenge – competitors kept the crowd entertained during the half-time interval by attempting to chip balls into the back of the pickup.
On joining Rygor Commercials earlier this year Van Sales Executive Duncan Kelly set his sights on winning an order from the club he has always supported. Oxford United’s new vehicles are a Sprinter 314 L3 H2 with Long body and high roof, a 17-seat 516 CDI Tourer minibus from the previous Sprinter range, and a small Citan 109 CDI crew van.
Loaded with kit and equipment the new Sprinter van – which incorporates 4G Internet connectivity with ‘game-changing’ Mercedes PRO connect vehicle management and Mercedes MBUX infotainment technology – accompanies the first team for away matches. Meanwhile, Oxford United’s Under 23 and Youth teams travel in the Sprinter Tourer, and the Citan, which has a second row of seats, is assigned to the club’s coaches.
Not even the disappointment of a 2-0 home defeat could take the gloss off Duncan’s day. “I grew up in Oxford and have been a ‘Yellows’ fan for as long as I can remember,” he said. “As I’m sure every true football fan will understand, I was very proud when I saw our stunning new vehicles lined up outside the ground, and the Rygor name alongside the pitch.”
Duncan continued: “I’ve worked in the automotive industry for the last seven years, and it’s always been an ambition to be able to count the club as one of my customers. Rygor Commercials’ commitment to Setting Standards meant we were able to provide Oxford United with a mobility solution which is perfectly tailored to the club’s requirements. All I can ask now, is that the team I love manage to set a few standards on the pitch this season.”
Oxford United Managing Director Neil McWilliams enthused: “As well as being extremely comfortable for our players and backroom staff, our new vans came with a great specification and are proving to be very fuel-efficient.
“Given its premium quality image, the Mercedes-Benz brand is one with which any business or organisation would be happy to be associated. Rygor Commercials, meanwhile, is a highly professional, local company with a growing reputation in the city we both serve.”
Like all Mercedes-Benz vans, Oxford United’s new Sprinters and Citan are backed by three-year, unlimited mileage manufacturer’s warranties, and came with MobiloVan cover, which includes free emergency roadside assistance, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
One of 11 locations from which Rygor Commercials operates, its Oxford branch on Eynsham Road, Cassington, has just benefited from a significant extension and complete recladding, as well as the addition of a dedicated vehicle handover area with canopy alongside the main entrance. Inside, the reception, after sales care departments, sales area and offices have been given a complete makeover, while investments in the workshop have included the introduction of an MoT testing service for vehicles in the Class 4, 5 & 7 categories.
