A week in the life of…a Massey Wilcox Driver – Part 1

Monday 1st June 2015

Massey Wilcox

Longstanding Rygor customer, Massey Wilcox has recently celebrated its 60th (Diamond) anniversary with a specially commissioned Actros 2545 from Rygor, with dramatic livery to mark the occasion. Massey Wilcox is a family owned and run business, located between Bath and Bristol. The company is ideally located for handling warehousing and distribution contracts for South West based companies, operating as a regional distribution centre or as a staging post for other hauliers requiring groupage services to South Wales and the South West of England.

Over our next few blog posts, we will be following the warehousing and distribution specialist’s latest fleet addition to find out how the Actros is performing.

We will be catching up with Steve Look, who with 25 years of service under his belt, is one of Massey Wilcox’s longest serving drivers, to get an insight into his working week, his thoughts on the Actros and what it’s really like to be a trucker.

It’s Wednesday afternoon and Steve has not only already driven hundreds of miles on the UK roads already this week, he’s even crossed the channel…

I started with a pick up in Ashford on Monday morning and then drove to France, before returning on Tuesday. Next it was up to Maidstone to do a drop off and this morning I started the journey back to Massey Wilcox HQ in Chilcompton, Somerset to load up ready for a delivery to Poole and Fareham tomorrow – a few miles on the clock, but that’s just a normal week for me!

Being on the road so much, for me, comfort is really important. I have driven a lot of trucks in my time, so I know when I drive a good one! The Mercedes-Benz Actros is a really comfortable vehicle to be in for a long period of time – perfect since I drive between France and the UK at least once a week. The handling is very good and it’s a fuel efficient truck, which means not only do we save money on fuel, we don’t have to stop as often to fill up, making better use of time.

The Massey Wilcox Actros I drive really stands out from the crowd too. When the sun comes out, the diamond design and pearlescent finish to the livery shines – people literally see me coming! In comparison to the rest of our fleet which is red, it is quite a contrast. We get a lot of comments and compliments on it!

I’ve got another drop off to do yet this week and maybe another trip to France. I have been driving for more than 50 years now, so I am certainly used to being on the road, but this weekend I am looking forward to heading back home to Somerset, where I am moving into my new apartment, and hopefully, weather permitting, I am going to spend a few hours at the allotment – fingers crossed!
